June 98 Monthly Update on ’91 grads:

Paul GRIMM

While I transition on to a civilian career, I'll be spending my summer training for the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon (just qualified in May for the 3 Oct race), reading up on all kinds of subjects from business/finance/economics to science/technology to leisurely reading (the Little Blue Book is not a part of this subset!), and just chilling out at my own pace. I've enjoyed the military for the last 7 (11?) years, but I'm excited about doing something different now. I can't see myself doing a career in air base defense for 20 years straight.  I will move from OKC to where ever the best job offer is. I'm still single so the flexibility is great.  Gotta go out for a swim. Let's keep in touch, whether we do an anniversary.  DoDo or not. (*** Paul has suggested starting to compile a Dodo issue for our 10 year reunion) . . . later, Paul wrote more:

Dude, I just joined the AOG! For one year. I'm considering going to the SACC in San Diego in Aug. Who could I talk to that has gone through this process? I'm looking for advice/info.

Laura FOGLESONG

Finally have a few minutes to write...Finals week is almost done! Only one more paper and presentation and then all that remains is the JMIC thesis!!! After 9 Jun address will be: 6139 Manchester Park Circle, Alexandria, VA 22310. Sorry I do not have much info to pass along this time. Lois (Baird) True and Jen (Mraz) Cos are both expecting in Oct--I'm avoiding the water here! When we move (9Jun), we will practically be next door neighbors w/ Jen which is good since her hubby (Alex) is still stationed at Barksdale and she may need increased help this summer and fall!

Kathy (Green) Joers had graduated and left for Eglin AFB, FL--Jeff still does not have orders. Think Kathy's graduating class is sending pic of all the zoo grads--it was a beautiful and inspiring ceremony. Mark True (now a 2nd year Med student) sat w/ us (Lois is already not feeling well). Made me look at our medical professionals in a whole new light. We are truly members of one big team and we need everyone--even the medical staff. Although, we can still tease them about improper wear of their uniforms.

Saw J Healey at a party early in May. He is on Air Staff and seems to be enjoying it. Working reccee issues in XOI.

David and I will be working in the pentagon starting in Sept after JMIC graduation. Dave Gyure is still trying to go to Osan AB in Sep but no official word yet. Those are the only 91 grads I see on a weekly basis.

Todd Kinross went into the US Navy after graduation and has now separated and lives in Cincinatti, as of last fall.

Take care!

I've been here at K-State for a year now, so I'm out of touch with the Air Force. In fact, I have more dealings with the Army (yuck!). I'm finishing up my master's in math and will be heading back to the Zoo in December to start teaching. My husband Kyle Voigt (Class of 90) is already out there as an AOC. We've taken the advice of several friends who've said that since I'm not flying out here, I might as well be pregnant. We're expecting our first on the 24th of July. As the child of tanker pilots, we're trying to emphasize to the baby the importance of being on time--especially for the birth. By the way, great job with the web site. It makes it much easier to keep in touch with what's going on. Jean

I’m here in the sunny desert of Edwards AFB, CA! I was stationed at Eglin AFB, FL, for almost 4 years as an aero engineer doing F-15/F-16 flight testing of electronic warfare and weapons. It was a great job AND a great location to boot! Then I went through Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB, CA, in 1995 and graduated as a Flight Test Engineer. It's cool, in that year alone, I flew 25 different aircraft (from the Goodyear blimp to the P-51 to the B-1) and got about 120 total hours of flying time! Not too bad for a geeky engineer! I stayed at Edwards and did 2 years of F-16 avionics testing, primarily for Foreign Military Sales customers, and got to fly back-seat in F-16Bs and Ds. And then, a month ago I moved to the F-117 squadron, doing more flight test. Unfortunately, there's no two-seat F-117s, but I still fly back-seat in F-16s and T-38s too, so I'm not complaining! I also figured out what I want to be when I grow up - a teacher. So, I'm working on my California Teaching Credential, and I'm really enjoying it. That's it in a nutshell!

I was really saddened to hear about Ed Moody. I had a few classes with him, and I loved his unique sense of humor. He was very laid back, and had that great voice and smile, you couldn't help but be Ed's friend. I will miss him.

More later,

Angi

[…later came immediately…]

--Deb (STEVEN) and Jeff LAMPE, Deb's out being a great mom and Jeff's a KC-135 pilot in Inga's squadron

Keep up the great work with the web page and Checkpoints! The web page has helped me find a few friends, and a few have found me too. The best one was from Turkey! Remember our Turkish foreign national classmate Chuck BEK? He found me on the web page, and it turns out when I was doing FMS testing on F-16s at Edwards, I was testing Turkish F-16s and helping out Chuck! Here's what I heard from him in May:

Right after graduation I started UPT in Turkey and started F-16s in about two years after graduating the Academy. And I have been flying since. I am flying F-16s in Merzifon, Turkey, a small city on the Northern part of Turkey along the Black Sea region. I got married in 1995 and have a kid on the way in about 4 months. Things are just fine for me in Turkey.

OK, one last one for you: Anna (VINCENT) and HP ADAMS had a baby boy named Nolan Britton Adams on Saturday, May 16th, 1998! Congrats Anna and HP!

Thanks again Carson!

Hey Carson You Slanderer,

This is Derek Oaks, and even though I was as nice as I can be to you at SOS (your wife was around), I still have not forgotten the work you did with my canceled check in the DODO. My wife has not forgotten. She is just now finishing therapy. I'll send you the bill.

Seriously, I wanted to send you my e-mail. It is oaksfarm@sprintmail.com. For an update from Charleston, there are so many '91 grads, and I will try to list a few. Gary and Diane (ROMAGLIA) HIGGENBOTHEM are doing well with their three kids, with Gary going to C-17A AC school in July. I am currently on my way to AC school at Altus. Tom JENSEN will be going in July, Charley SCHLEGEL is taking time out from his harrassment of the Air Force's generals to do AC school also. Mel BLOUNT is getting married this summer, girl TBD (just kidding, her name is Lisa). Ro LEWIS' wife Monique from Brasil is expecting this fall. Dion GRAHAM'S wife is expecting another one. Andy LESHIKAR is doing well, as are Mark LINDOW and Rod LEWIS. There are a number of others, but the names escape me right now.

Until next time, Derek

Moving on to corporate America in August of '98. Accepted a job as a consultant with Kurt Salmon Associates and will be traveling world-wide for the next three years. After the "relocation" period, I'll be settling with my family (wife-Laurel and daughter-Hunter) in one of KSA's four hub cities: San Francisco, Atlanta, Chicago, or Princeton, NJ. Haven't decided which city yet. It's been a blast!

…Bill wrote back again a little later with a LOT more!….

What a great tool to keep in touch with everybody! Just sorry it's taken me 7 years to figure this computer thing out. Technologically challenged, that's for sure. I figured it was about time I dropped a line to the class scribe with some updates. Don't know whether you'll use this for Checkpoints or just the website, but here goes:

After almost five years in F-15E maintenance at Elmendorf (loved Alaska too much--had a hard time leaving), I moved on to Wright-Patt in 96 to do the AFIT Masters thing (Logistics management). Two years have passed in Ohio and not much has changed. Things rarely change here. Finished up AFIT and had a follow-on to the F-22 SPO and have been here since Sept. Wright-Patt is a great place to have a family, and I've taken advantage of it. Got married (Laurel) and had a little girl (Hunter).

With that in mind, I took review of my life and decided it was time to move on to corporate America. I separate from the AF in August 98, and I've accepted a job as a consultant with Kurt Salmon Associates. I won't have a permanent home for about three years, as KSA will be moving my family and I around the world to different projects in the retail logistics business. I hope our classmates keep this website current, because I plan on looking some people up while we tour the country! After the first three years are over, we'll settle in either San Francisco, Atlanta, Chicago, or Princeton NJ. At any rate, I've either run across or been stationed with many of our classmates over the years and I'll try to summarize their situations as best I can.

Haley DONOHO and I went to AFIT together and he's moved on to a Logistics Plans job at AMC HQ at Scott AFB. For those of you that knew Haley, it was amazing that the hillbilly actually survived both USAFA and AFIT! He's stationed there with Russ MAJOR, who's probably about ready for a PCS as he's been there since 95. Russ finally got his little boy (after two girls...he was rolling the dice!) and I can't remember the little guy's name. However, his initials are TD (intentionally to correspond with touchdown) and Russ has his room painted like a football stadium. Living his dreams through his son!

Mark CHERRY was here when I arrived in 96 doing the post-AFIT assignment in engineering of some form or another and has since moved on to McClellan AFB, CA. Mark and his new wife Jen just got hitched this past weekend (13 Jun) at USAFA, and I unfortunately missed the occasion.

Roy GOZUM is here at Wright-Patt and is finishing up his AF service just like me. Roy is in the C-17 SPO and will be joining the corporate ranks at the same time as me. We've been going through this process together and he's yet to pick a future employer.

Chris BAIR (jughead) has been a pillar of knowledge for both Roy and myself in this career search effort. Chris separated from the AF about two years ago (medical separation) after flying C-141's for the first few years of his AF career. He now works for Orion International Consulting, a junior-military officer recruiting firm that places folks like us in corporate America. He's doing extremely well (married with kids) and without him, I'd have probably ended up flipping burgers at some McDonalds somewhere. A great resource if you're considering a career change.

Jason CAMPBELL was flying C-130's up at Elmendorf when I left in 96 and has since moved on to Hill AFB, UT. I have no clue what he's doing there, but rumor has it that he's a functional check flight (FCF) pilot for C-130s coming out of major maintenance. That's a scary thought considering the last card I got from him had a photo of a Cessna bug-smasher rolled over on it's top-side on a dry river bed that he was apparently a passenger in. He swears he wasn't flying it at the time, but I'm not so sure.

Dale FRENCH (started with us but finished with '92) of USAFA basketball fame was one of my groomsmen and is still in Alaska, but not for long. He's been doing some pretty weird intel stuff that I couldn't even do justice to by attempting to describe it. Dale, like many of us, has decided to separate from the AF, although he hasn't decided what he's going to do when he grows up. He and his wife Katie are planning to tour the wild wild west in the next 6 months before deciding where to go to work.

Mike BRAUCHER, another one of my groomsmen and roommate during maintenance school is finishing up at AFIT here as we speak and will be cross-training into supply for a tour at, of all places, McConnell AFB, KS! Kind of like watching grass grow. His theory is that "Kansas will give me an excuse to get on an airplane to go see people and go to new places." Brauch is one of the last true bachelors and I doubt he'll change that status any time soon. It seems to be a matter of pride to him.

I attended Rick WILLIAMSON's wedding out in New Jersey back in the fall. Rick is a C-141 pilot transitioning to the C-17 down at Charleston SC. His new wife, Suzie, is a saint as she can put up with him when he's home (which isn't very often--he's traveled to places in the 141 that I've never even heard of).

Dane BLOCK is still flying KC-135's down at Robins AFB, GA. He's rarely home either, and I think he spent something like 4 out of 6 months TDY of his son's (Dane Jr.) first days of life. I think it is beginning to wear on him. Fortunately, he and his wife Jana are still remaining as positive as possible.

I've run out of stories, however, I'm sure more will come to mind right after I send this. At any rate, I hope some of this info gets out because I haven't seen a lot on these folks over the years and I'm sure there are folks out there wondering what everybody's up to. Keep up on the good work---the website is a great thing. I just hope people keep it current. Take care.

Cheers-

Bill Wosilius

I have thought of the e-mail I would send you for months now, always not remembering to bring the latest AOG mag with me to work to send you something. I finally remembered!

A quick message for now, as it is the end of the day and I have errands to run. Quickly, I am flying C-141s at McChord (home town, wouldn’t you know), still single but working on it, and I greatly appreciate the last newsletter where you used my senior quote! I about choked on my Cheerios! I was flattered you would do such a thing - thank you!

This is the only address to reach me at, as I do not have one of these machines at home yet. Things are going well, ops tempo is high like with everyone else, but I have a couple of weeks here in the office. I will attempt to reach you tomorrow, pass you some names of folks up here and basically bring you up to speed on what's been happening.

Doing a great job with the column, appreciate the selfless work. Include this statement in your next OPR. Talk to you tomorrow.

…later, Ben wrote some more back to me….

Fast Neat Average...

No, no PCS for me anytime soon. Will most likely be able to stay to the end of the commitment, Nov 2000. I plan on "looking at my options" at that point, that's what I can tell you now. More, obviously, later in person.

Kelly and I were fortunate to get an assignment to The Ohio State University to get my master's degree in electrical engineering. USAFA's EE Department is sponsoring me. I almost didn't get to start school because of the pilot shortage. Supposedly I am one of the last pilots to go to an AFIT sponsored program for the next couple of years. Just before we moved from Dover AFB, Kelly delivered our first child, Austin Tyler. He was born on December 8, 1997. We should be moving in the summer of 1999. Maybe to teach at USAFA, all depending on the pilot shortage.

Quick '91 note. Saw a plethora of 91ers at SOS class 98-C, including Doug SOHO, John KARA, Lisa WEBSTER (BROWN), Joey MULL, and Carlene PERRY. Lisa is still flying C-130's at Little Rock. Gordon KLINGENSCHMITT and I were members of B-28, the 98-C Chief of Staff flight, which was pretty cool.

In other news, after crossflowing from C-130's, Mike BROCKEY completed F-15C RTU at Tyndale and received the "Top Gun" Award. Mike, Kelly, Lil' Mike and Elizabeth (born Jan 98) recently arrived at Kadena and are trying to get settled in.

Thanks for handling such an important job for our class.

All is great here in Raleigh NC, I just bought a house down the street from Andy Taylor, Barney and Goob. Out for two years now, married to Dana, one kid w/one more on the way. I also had a small part in the movie "Batman Forever" which I am pretty proud of.

…Tav note: You can see Chris in the scene with *****.

Here’s some background on Chris…

I graduated UPT, picked up a C-141 to McGuire and flew there for three years. I developed a seizure disorder (epilepsy) and ended up being grounded and then medically separated. I went through a recruiting agency called ORION (as a candidate) and ended up getting hired by ORION as an Account Executive (I recruit the companies, not the candidates) in June 1996. I am married (Dana) [and they have] one little girl (Maddie age 3 & one more on the way--NOV). We absolutely love it here in Raleigh.

He’s still flying the C-27 Spartan down there, and didn’t have any news for us about possible follow-on. But he was pretty confident it would be in the Herc world.
