BOLD GOLD ALUMNI NEWS: MAY 98

Hey, folks! I admit I’m still late, but at least now I’m LESS late!

If any of you are reading this before 15 June, and have something you want to have printed in Checkpoints, send it to me ASAP; I’m sending the document to the AOG on 17 June.

These entries go pretty much in chronological order, from the very beginning to the very end of May. I do very little editing on them, but have stepped in on some of the more serious grammatical offenses . . .

Where you see "***" . . . that’s me.

As always,

Enjoy.

Our packers come tomorrow to take our belongings to Florida (Eglin AFB) where we will meet them on June 1st! Our new address will be:

Boy, do I miss parts (only parts) of SOS. That was great to be able to get up early and play racquetball. (***Hank and I were in the same flight and did the racquetball thing) After I got back, I spent half of March TDY to Africa in support of the Prez. The rest of my time has been spent packing and coordinating for the move. We fortunately sold our house 2 days after I got back and it's been busy ever since.

Take care,

Hank

I am back from Korea and I'm on my way to SOS. My start date is 11 May. Honestly, I'm not looking forward to going back to school. I hope it's not too much like those class days at the Zoo. I'm still in the U-2 "spy" business. The mission is pretty rewarding and the airplane is ALWAYS a challenge to fly. I also really enjoy flying the T-38 when I'm back at Beale. Did you know that Derek NIELSEN (’92) is out of the AF? He's going to school in Colorado to get his MBA.

***A little while later Don wrote back . . .

Tav, I'm at SOS. It feels like I'm back at the zoo. I've met several of our classmates as well as some others. Guess what? Russ BALKA is here. He'll be going back to the Academy to coach boxing. I've also met Pete FORD (***’90?). I'm fighting sleep everyday in class as well as in Polifka. What's up with all the rules in flickerball?

We just moved down to Altus, OK, so I could be an instructor pilot down here in the schoolhouse! If you are ever in this part of the world, please feel free to stop in for a little home cooking, and (eventually) some homebrew!!!!

William GLASCOE

I'm on a quest to establish the world's first Space Force, namely the USSF (more than providing pictures of anything to anyone anywhere at anytime--I'm talking about FIREPOWER/Electromagnetic Power, lethal, precise, and omnipresent). I'm rewriting United States Code Title 10 now. Wish me luck.

I'm on my way to McConnell from Fairchild. I've been in the tankers now for about 5 years. The jet is getting a glass cockpit and I'll be instructing the rest of the tanker corps so they can return to their units and instruct their folks. Hey keep in touch. Dave

Sorry we have not written in a while but things have been crazy here! Still two more weeks until the semester is over but we have big news. Although we do not have orders in hand yet, the USAF "official word" is that we are staying in the DC area after graduation. Thanks to Maj. Lessel for helping expedite this process! Sorry to all those people we were excited about living close to us in Texas but you are still welcome to come visit DC!

Starting in September 1998, David and I will be working in the Pentagon. David is going to the Joint Staff (J2O) and I'll start work in the Office of Secretary of Defense's foreign liaison office. We are both very excited about our new jobs!

Last summer, we rented a small, low maintenance (no yard) place close to school thinking we would only be here a year. Since we are staying up to another 3 years, we went house hunting. We found a great new Pulte townhouse in the Kingstown area of Springfield. It is in the Manchester Park subdivision and it is between the Springfield and Van Dorn Metro stops (blue line)--also near Springfield mall. It is a 3 story, 3 bedroom with den (and sleeper) so we have plenty of room for any visitors (2450 sq feet)! Although we close on 29 May, the movers come and pack up our stuff on Monday 8 June and then we move on Tuesday 9 June. After that our new info will be:

6139 Manchester Park Circle

Alexandria, VA 22310

Jim SIMMONS

I got to McChord about six months ago. I spent a little over three years at Wright-Patt. I did the AFIT thing and followed on to the C-17 SPO. I am currently working as the director of logistics in the C-17 integration office at McChord. I am a maintenance officer and am in charge of the logistics beddown for the C-17s coming to McChord. We get our first airplane in the summer of 99 and things are picking up here in preparation.

I see plenty of 91ers here. John VAUGHN stops by pretty regularly. Chris COLLEY lives right around the corner. I ran into Brian HENLEY in the hall the other day. I also see Ray ROBINSON pretty regular.

A little news on a few other classmates: Jim LYNCH is out and is working for John Deere in Waterloo Iowa. Roy GOZUM was in my AFIT class and worked in the C-17 SPO with me. He is getting out this summer. Russ MAJOR was also in my AFIT class and he is now working at HQAMC.

Things for me are going pretty well. My wife and I have three strapping boys (and that is plenty)!!! We like the area and are looking forward to a challenging assignment. I am currently sponsoring a cadet on a summer research program. That is pretty cool. It is interesting to hear things have changed and how things have stayed the same.

Take care,

Jim Simmons

Greetings everyone!

We left Fayetteville on the 10th of April and arrived at Hurlburt Field on the 11th. Florida and Hurlburt have made a good first impression on us. The weather has been beautiful though hot, the base is really nice, and the people have been great. We found a friendly church and are getting settled into our house. Many friends have helped us by helping paint, keeping David, and bringing meals. Laura is due mid June and I started MC-130E school May 4th so our plate is full and we appreciate everything!

Well, that's all for now. As always you are welcome to visit us -- and the beautiful beaches, of course. You have a guestroom available at

Jerry SZYBIST

I am over at Lackland AFB at the USAF Security Forces Academy. I am married (Anne) with a 2-year-old daughter (Sarah). Hope to hear from you soon.

[Jerry has been in and out of the area due to several TDYs/Exercises in Korea. He worked on Camp Bullis (a large, local Army facility) soon after his arrival here in S.A. in Oct 96. He’s been working on Lackland (the Medina annex, actually) in the Combat Arms division, helping to train AF Security Forces on all the types of non-aerial weaponry the Air Force owns.]

***OK, that’s it for the month of May!

Actually, I guess I should update you all on what I’m doing, too. It’s been easy to forget that what I expect of others I should do myself! Here goes:

Carson TAVENNER

I recently received word that I can start grad school (China Studies) this fall, instead of waiting for January to roll around! Mirroring Laura FOGLESONG’s comment above, many thanks to Maj. Lessel at AFPC!

My Chinese classes will be in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. I’m currently waiting to receive orders to take my family "home" in September. I grew up in Washington, so this move is a real dream come true. Who can argue with getting stationed near Paradise?

Partly in conjunction with this assignment, my wife, Wendy, and I plan on taking a trip to Shanghai next summer. And the summer after that, we’ll be moving again (assuming I graduate!) to start teaching Asian history at USAFA. I imagine there will be some other courses to teach as well, maybe a history of organized crime or international drug trafficking. The assignment will last three years, during which we will be living near Wendy’s parents! Imagine, five continuous years near both sets of parents. I love to think of the benefits for our children. We have been richly blessed.

This also means I’ll be showing up at the zoo just in time for our 10th reunion . . . not far off! Paul Grimm has been the only one I can recall right now to say anything in way of planning for it. Please be thinking of photos to use, stories to tell, and memories to share!

Thinking of reunion, and the role of the AOG, I’m reminded I have a column to write! So again, if you’re reading this before 15 Jun, and want to get something in September’s issue, send it to me NOW please!

All the best and more,

Your bud,

Carson
