February 1999

1 Feb: From Scot DANFORTH:

Ex-cadet from CS-23, booted our 2-degree year. Figured you'd remember who I was, but didn't know if you would. Hell, still don't. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the web page. It let me e-mail a couple of fellas I'd lost touch with since Erik RUNDQUIST'S wedding in 1992. While I spent my time in the Black Sheep, I still have a lot of good memories of the Blue Zoo and some of the good people I met out there. Long ago I made peace with myself about it, but it's still a little weird when I run into Bold Golders. If you're curious, I spent 2 years at KI Sawyer paying back for my USAFA time as a carpenter in CE. Then I re-upped, cross-trained into CCT, and spent about 3 years doing that at Pope. Ran into Jim SEARS and a couple other fellas while I was there. Yeah, and Kurt BULLER was down at Hurby, then came up to Pope. Not really sure where he is right now. Anyway, fall of '97 I left for the Kentucky ANG 123 Special Tactics Flight. I let them pay for me to finish my BA at UK while keeping all of my jumpmaster, dive, ATC, flight physical...quals current. Graduated in December and now I'm deciding whether to go on to law school or go back in and play with JSOC for a 4-year tour. Don't know what I'm going to do yet, but I've got about 90 days to figure it out. My address is duke_danforth@hotmail.com. Take care and talk to you later.  Scot

1 Feb: From Bill GRACE'S mom:

[I] no longer get Checkpoints, and thus the Class of '91 news. You may recall that, at the time Bill died, we designated memorials to USAFA for a sand volleyball court. I am pleased to let you know that the court has not only been completed (in Vandenberg quad), but reportedly finally even has real volleyball sand in it. We hope the court will be a source of enjoyment to current cadets for years to come, and we think Bill would have enjoyed the spectacle of AOG staffers visiting all the sports bars in C Springs to collect sand samples to show the civil engineers. If you think it proper, you might suggest this to Bill's classmates: should they be visiting the Academy from some area with high quality beach sand, they could bring a handful and add it to Bill's court.

…and later….

Having read the web site, I realize you may be confused about where the volleyball court was actually placed. After a false start with a "Cadillac" plan by the gym, more fiscally prudent heads prevailed. Bill's court is in Vandenberg quad, and is actually a properly engineered, up to specs court ina spot where cadets had tried to create their own. So we know it's in the right place. Second Group (Bill was a War Eagle) is in charge of maintaining the equipment.

7 Feb: From Jonathan PECE

After a year in Korea as an IP on the very fun C-12J (Beech1900 type rating), I'm back at Fairchild flying the tankersaurus. I have two cats, two dogs, and one wife.

8 Feb: From Susan RANK

… here's an update for you on Deep Freeze [Antarctica]. We've been alternating missions with the Reserves here, so my crew has only been down there twice. All I can say is "Wow! Pretty cool!" Actually, the temperature wasn't as "cool" as I expected. It was only -5C the 1st trip and right at 0C the second time. It's pretty awesome though to land on an ice runway that has no other markings besides flags every 1000ft down the sides. Didn't see any penguins though. :-( The weather was so-so on the 1st trip, but was clear & sunny the 2nd time. Antarctica is gorgeous. Lots of mountains and the ice is very blue where it meets the sea. Actually, I'm having a tough time using the word "ice" so much. You see, we play this little game the whole time we're here: any time you say the word "ice," you owe everyone who heard you a drink. Doesn't sound too tough, but it sneaks up quite easily! (Ice cream, ice cubes, ice chest, icing, icicle...you get it.) Plus, it's so much easier to say "the ice" than "Antarctica." Well, gotta run. Let me know if you want me to send you a picture & to what address. I don't have a scanner yet, so snail mail will have to do! See ya! Susan
